The Senegalese hip-hop stars Xuman and Keyti will present during this year’s Munich Biennale with their satirical news program “Journal Rappé” ten topical episodes of rapped news and themed segments. This project was developed in the hip-hop movement and has been using since 2013 the possibilities offered by digital channels such as YouTube or Facebook to ignite and support social commitment and an interest in politics among the youth in Senegal. As a cross-over media format it creates a space for an alternative discussion and is an astounding example of these two African artists’ sparkling creativity. One result from this is a journalism of citizens and artists that goes beyond the normal standards, and which deals intensively with socio-political and economic subjects and questions the boundaries between art, activism, and gridlocked communication routes.
In “Journal Rappé” Xuman and Keyti curate pointed news reports that have to do in particular with the Senegalese population. The subjects are issues involving politics, the environment, the youth, or development. With this they are presenting a counterweight to the dominant media coverage in Senegal and the West.
As part of the Munich Biennale “Journal Rappé” will produce from May 15 to May 24 a daily, new live video premiere on topical subjects; afterwards they will discuss these subjects with the online audience. This unique platform offers these two rappers the opportunity to share their vision of a vibrant, rapidly growing continent that is confronted with extreme challenges.
