Samir Odeh-Tamimi

Samir Odeh-Tamimi´s musical language is anchored in his involvement with Western European avant-garde and Arabic music. Born in Jaljulia near Tel Aviv, he´s enthusiastic about both European classical music and the aesthetics of new music. This composer came to Germany at the age of 22, and he studied musicology and composition there. In addition to dealing with compositional role models such as Giacinto Scelsi and Iannis Xenakis, during this time he also returned to examining the music culture of his home country. In the meantime, Samir Odeh-Tamimi´s compositions can be heard at renowned festivals, and he has received commissions from, among others, Deutschlandfunk; Saarland Radio; Donaueschinger Musiktage; HELLERAU, the European Center for The Arts (Dresden); Westdeutscher Rundfunk; and the Bayerischer Rundfunk´s musica viva program. At the 2016 Klarafestival in Brussels the work “L´Apocalypse Arabe I,“ based on texts by the Lebanese poet Etel Adnan and directed by Pierre Audi, was performed between the two parts of a staged version of Bach´s “St. John Passion.“ For the Festival d´Aix-en-Provence Samir Odeh-Tamimi is currently working on further developing the work into a full-length music theater piece, which will have its premiere in 2021. Samir Odeh-Tamimi has been a member of the Akademie der Künste (Academy of Arts) in Berlin since 2016, and that same year he received the GEMA Music Author Award.
