Robyn Schulkowsky

Robyn Schulkowsky was born and raised in South Dakota. She has made it her mission to bring the wonders of percussion closer to people all over the world. Her constant explorations of new sound dimensions have led to the development of new and unusual musical instruments. As an active musician on five continents, Robyn Schulkowsky moved to Germany during the heyday of experimental music. In collaboration with the composers Karlheinz Stockhausen; Iannis Xenakis; and Morton Feldman she has performed and recorded world premieres of some of the most important solo percussion works of the 20th and 21st centuries, and she has presented her works on tours in Africa; India; Asia; the U.S.; South America; and Mexico. Robyn Schulkowsky has collaborated with the legendary African drummer Kofi Ghanaba; the visual artist Guenther Uecker; the actress Edith Clever; the social scientist Nilam Ram; and the choreographers Merce Cunningham and Sasha Waltz. Schulkowsky has made more than 20 recordings, including CDs with the violist Kim Kashkashian; and the trumpeters Nils Petter Molvaer and Reinhold Friedrich, and she has recorded works by the composers Morton Feldman and Christian Wolff – she has worked with these two composers for more than 20 years.
