Professor David Roesner is a professor of theater studies with a focus on music theater at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. He has done research and taught at the universities of Hildesheim, Exeter, and Kent, and he also occasionally works as a theater musician. He studied cultural studies and aesthetic practice at the University of Hildesheim Foundation, where he received his doctorate with a thesis on “Theater als Musik“ (“Theater as Music“) (Narr, 2003). His research focuses on the musicalization of theater and the theatricalization of music, sound, and performance, intermediality, as well as performance and music in video games. In 2007 his essay “The Politics of the Polyphony of Performance“ (CTR 18/1, 2008) was awarded the Thurnau Prize of Music Theater Studies. Most recently, he published the books “Composed Theatre“ (with Matthias Rebstock, Intellect, 2011); “Theatre Noise“ (with Lynne Kendrick, CSP, 2012); and also the monographs “Musicality in Theatre: Music as Model, Method and Metaphor in Theatre-Making“ (Ashgate, 2014); and “Theatermusik. Analysen und Gespräche“ (“Theater Music. Analysis and Discussions“) (Theatre of Time, 2019).
